Join us on the Jewish Ghetto Tour Rome and discover the ancient past of the Eternal City. Dating back to 1555, the 7-acre Roman Jewish Ghetto was home to more than 4,700 Jews ordered to live in a district isolated from the Christians for nearly 300 years. In 1848 and when Italy became a republic, the walls of Jewish Ghetto Rome were demolished. Our English-speaking guide takes you through pedestrian walk ways and along historic buildings as you learn about the Jewish Ghetto’s past.
Today, this quaint area, called the Jewish District Rome, is full of restaurants, shops and cafés. With your guide, visit the lovely Piazza Matteo, with its famous fountain of tartarughe, representing the heart of the Jewish area. Then on to the ruins in the Portico d’Ottavia a monumental gateway built by Augustus prior to his reign as emperor. Continue down the well-preserved street, Via Portico d’Ottavia, notice the kosher restaurants and shops of locally produced Judaica (religious items). Once in the Synagogue gaze upon the impressive square-shaped dome rebuilt on the original site in only 3 years. The Synagogue’s Museum houses 2nd century artifacts and reliefs. Museum entrance tickets are not included. Our authentic Jewish Ghetto Rome Tour takes you into the ancient past with history notes and the food culture of the great Jewish Ghetto in Rome.
